Maryland regulations

Maryland law, based on regulations issued by the Maryland Department of Safety, stipulates that the minimum amount of time required for a handgun permit course is eight (8) hours. Four (4) hours must be spent in the classroom and an additional four (4) hours on a gun range.

The majority of handgun schools complete the permit course in one day. Some schools conduct the course over two days. Check with the handgun school.

Exceptions are individuals in law enforcement and active or former military personnel who can produce military pistol training records. These individuals must undertake the classroom portion of the permit class only. They may substitute their law enforcement or military records for the gun qualification portion of the handgun permit course. These records are handed in when the handgun permit application and certificate of completion are submitted to the Maryland Department of Safety. Duplicate training records, a copy of the completion certificate, and the written test from the classroom, are kept by the handgun school.

A Maryland Handgun Permit is valid until it's expiration date has been met.. There is a mandated receritifcation process after your initial permit expires. New fingerprints and photographs are required as well.

When a Maryland Handgun Permit is issued, a permit holder must abide by the restrictions that have been placed by the Maryland State Police. Failure to do so can lead to revocation, suspension and/or denial of any future handgun permit requests. Criminal charges can be filed against the permit holder as well.
