The State of Maryland is unique in that a person can carry a handgun at the age of eighteen (18) but can not own a handgun until their twenty one (21). There are several justifications that allows a person in Maryland to carry a handgun, either concealed or unconcealed. By virtue of employment ( i.e Security Guard), personal protection with documented Police Reports corroborating an actual need, just to name two reasons.
A background check is required to purchase a handgun
Obtain from the Maryland State Police, an all inclusive packet that spells out the procedures and fees required to apply for a Maryland State Gun Permit. Once this packet is completed and notarized, fingerprints and photographs must be obtained. The applicant is required by law, to attend and successfully complete, with a state certified handgun instructor, a mandated course of fire as well as classroom training. Topics discussed include, and are not limited to, civil and criminal ramifications, use of deadly force, history of firearms, etc.
